One-of-a-Kind National Conference Brings Great Minds Together for Sexual State of the Union
Join professional sex geek Reid Mihalko of ReidAboutSex.com as he attempts to wrangle and moderate fellow sexperts Tracy Clark-Flory, Lynn Comella, Abiola Abrams, and Emily Morse for the summit’s exciting and humorous closing panel, “Sexual Stargazing: Sex & Pop Culture!”
Panel description: Cultural attitudes about sex are changing faster than ever before and popular culture, fueled by technological changes, help create these shifts. What is it about celebrities that makes us so interested in their sex lives? Do we really want them to serve as role models? Who’s using the spotlight of fame or their pop culture platform as an opportunity to send a different kind of message? How can we use the contemporary folkways of mass culture to create different representations of sex? And how can media literacy help us understand sexual messages?
From the Good Vibes Sex Summit website:
In an election year in which sexual health and women’s health are being used as a political football, Good Vibrations is summoning the brightest minds together for the first annual Sex Summit, a day-long sexual state of the union. Good Vibrations, the trusted San Francisco-based company that takes pride in providing accurate information on sexuality and toys for grown-ups, presents this dynamic conference on Saturday, October 27th at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis in downtown San Francisco.
Featuring authors and educators from various perspectives, this forum will examine the relationship between sex and the media, health, pop culture and politics in a series of panel and keynote presentations including esteemed author and research scientist Dr. Debby Herbenick, award-winning journalist Brian Alexander, and sex therapist and lecturer Dr. Marty Klein. Journalists, academics, sexologists, authors and the public will converge for this first-ever conference in a lively and relevant day-long discussion in the city where the sexual revolution began.
Opening keynote speaker Dr. Debbie Herbenick, author, research Scientist and Associate Director at The Center for Sexual Health Promotion as well as sexual health educator at The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction at Indiana University, will kick off the event. Complete bios of all the panelists and presenters are listed at goodvibessexsummit.com.
What can we look forward to in the landscape of sex, and where are we now? Panels and keynote addresses will expound on themes in four tracks: Regulating Pleasure: Sex, Politics and Censorship; Outspoken/Unsaid: Sex and the Media; Pills, Profits and Pleasures: Sexual Health and Pharmaceuticals; and Sexual Stargazing: Sex and Pop Culture (moderated by sex and relationship expert, Reid Mihalko of ReidAboutSex.com). Attendees can continue the conversation and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of San Francisco at the post-conference hosted cocktail reception in The View bar and lounge, upstairs from 6-9pm.
Dr. Carol Queen, Good Vibrations’ Staff Sexologist, Historian, Co- Founder of the Center for Sex and Culture, and Curator of the Antique Vibrator Museum says, “We are eager to see how this phenomenal line-up of thinkers, writers, and activists will contextualize the role of sexuality in contemporary culture and politics, especially given the pre-election relevance of these issues. Sexuality is a major component of key political issues, and this country needs all the incisive analysis it can get. ” Dr. Queen will also be the event’s co-curator.
“Good Vibrations is very proud to host this historic conference and we are so pleased to have all these great minds in one place especially in such a critical political season. The Sex Summit was planned in the spirit of other well-known idea sharing conferences, and we are delighted to host this conversation in San Francisco,” says Jackie Strano Executive Vice President, Good Vibrations.
The Sex Summit is part of a fun and festive weekend of sex-positivity, following the “QUICKIES,” Good Vibrations’ Indie Erotic Short Film Competition and party at the Castro Theatre on Friday, October 26th. Hosted by Peaches Christ and Dr. Carol Queen, independent filmmakers from around the world present their entertaining and provocative short films in this alternate forum for a broader exploration of “erotic cinema.” A ticket to the Quickies is included in the Sex Summit admission, so attendees can enjoy the best of both worlds — from entertaining cinema to thought-provoking academia.
