I’ll admit, I’ve always had resistance to mastermind programs, but never knew why. I always thought it was because the ones I’d heard about where tens of thousands of dollars, mostly white, cis-men who were already rich… But then I realized that it wasn’t actually that…
It was because those groups weren’t filled with Sex Geeks.
In the last 5 years, I’ve spent over $50K on business seminars (over $75K total if you add in planes and hotels and rental cars). And that was not ideal for me to make quantum leaps forward in my business. Nope. Not at all.
It actually held some of my growth back, probably costing me thousands of dollars in lost revenue in the process. (Who wants to implement business advice that’s tainted with all sorts of “isms,” right?)
But, luckily, I stumbled upon two A-Ha moments that became my biggest breakthroughs!
A-Ha #1: Date Your Business Model.
A-Ha #2: Surround yourself with your people (especially the ones ahead of you!) – Yep. Hang out with the best of the best of your peers if you can round ’em up!
I noticed the biggest personal growth for myself click into place when I started surrounding myself with fellow sex educators while helping them with their businesses. Conferences like CatalystCon and Woodhull fed my need for sex geek community, but not my need to expand my business. And helping my peers with their businesses forced me to really walk my talk in my own career!
And — Boom! — doing it more frequently only increased my momentum. Yep. Helping fellow sex educators with business stuff was helping me! I showed up more powerfully, get more done, and stayed more enthusiastic and inspired in my career even when I was having a tough day (or month!).
Half a decade of growing momentum in my brand and business, and surrounding myself with my peers, is what helped TV producers decide to put me on NETFLIX next to comedian Chelsea Handler, landed me my first $5000-for-the-weekend coaching client, got me invited to speak at other’s events and stages (where, for example, I was able to sell $15,000 in courses in less than 90-minutes), and it’s what continues to draw people to pay money to attend my workshops, lectures, online courses, and experience workshops I designed and turned over to others to run (Remember Cuddle Party? But back in 2002, it was a very different story.
I was a struggling New York City actor hustling two bartending jobs, a door man gig, and working part-time for a photographer as his studio manager so I could make my Manhattan rent each month. Every month was a financial struggle, and personally, I struggled to figure out who I was sexually and in relationships.
I was determined to not repeat the pain and suffering I saw my parents put themselves through in their marriage. In between the auditions and all the hustling to make rent, I was endlessly geeking out about sex, relationships, and intimacy. Working in the NYC bar scene and waiting around at auditions, I had an endless stream of people from all over the world to ask what was working and what wasn’t in their love lives. This was before I realized I was a Sex Geek, mind you, but hindsight being 20/20, each conversation was me doing nerdy field work trying to unlock the secrets of what “traditional relationship advice” was missing and why sex and intimacy was ending so often in crash-and-burn disasters.
When the producers of the soap opera Guiding Light surrounded me on set one day (I had a bit role as Yves, the massage therapist!) to tell me that they all agreed that I gave better dating advice than their therapists and to encourage me to start charging money for my relationship advice, I was flattered AND petrified. Me? Teach my advice? It would take me two years of building up the courage, and more friends kicking me in the pants, to create and teach my first workshop.
Two years to build up all that courage!
And guess what?
It was a dismal failure.
Only two people showed up, and one person I comped! To say it was a financial failure having rented the room and all the sweat, tears, and worry that went into the panicked, last minute selling of more tickets and whether or not to cancel the whole thing… It was a disaster. When regulars at the bar asked excitedly how the class went, it was a total embarrassment to tell them I only had two people showed up.
