Summer luvin’ is upon us!
As Summer heats up across the country, I hope Spring Fever wasn’t tooooo hard on you!
I’ve been my characteristically busier-than-a-bee these last few months, and while I’ve got lots to share about my whereabouts and what-tos, I’m equally (if not more) excited about what’s coming down the pipeline! (Hint: This week’s Cracking The Midlife Code and Safer Sex Talks, and this October’s ASEP Conference!)
Without further adieu, here’s a collage of What I Did On My Summer Vacation (So Far) and What I’m About To Do This Summer!
Spread the word, people, and get your “Sex Geek Chic” on this summer!
What I Did On My Summer Vacation (So Far)
In March, I whirl-winded through Phoenix, Arizona, for my Earning Your BLACKBELT In Relationships DVD screening and to work with a small group of sex-positive professionals on building better boundaries and agreements in our work.
To me, a “sex-positive professional,” which I think should be a self-selected orientation/definer, is anyone whose work/profession/calling/hobby is in alignment with the following intentions:
- Helping people to talk about sex and relationships in more empowering, normalizing ways
- Providing people with accurate sexual health information (Sexual health, after all, is a basic human right!)
- Working from or towards an awareness of sex-neutrality, informed consent, and a sense of relationship choice and freedom of sexual self-expression
- Includes pleasure as a worthwhile reason to have sex, if not one of THE best reasons!
I’m nervous to share the above bullet-points because they are a work in progress for a future post; however, I think sitting on my definition of “sex-positive professional” until it’s “perfect” isn’t the most useful thing to do. Thus, I’m sharing it now (And I reserve the right to make amends as my thinking improves!).
Better boundary-setting and agreement making skills among sex-positive professionals (whether you’re a sex blogger, work for Planned Parenthood, write how-to books, teach Tantra, sell toys to bachelorettes, or do sex work, etc., etc.) has been a small, personal crusade of mine for several years now.
If we the “sexperts” aren’t being great role models for clear communication and taking care of our selves, what kind of example are we setting for those who seek us out?
The larger version of this crusade of mine would culminate at the end of April when I returned to Arizona, to give an important talk on Sex Addiction, Erotic Integrity and Best Practices in Tantra at Sedona’s 10th Annual ISTA Sex and Consciousness Educators Conference, which I was also honored to help Emcee.

- Giving my Sex Addiction and Erotic Integrity Talk at the ISTA 10th Anniversary Sex and Consciousness Educators Conference in Sedona, AZ.

- Posing with Taoist sexual energy icon Master Mantak Chia and Tantra educator Triambika after Master Chia's keynote at the ISTA 10th Anniversary Sex and Consciousness Educators Conference. Since I was co-Emcee, I got to help introduce Master Chia! My inner Sex Geek was a'squealin'!
But before I’d get to give my talk in Sedona, I would spend many weeks on the road teaching workshops and working with relationship coaching clients, and a truly amazing weekend in Washington, D.C., helping keynote a panel discussion with some of my sex ed heroes at Momentum Conference! It was an honor to sit at the same table as Tristan Taormino, Dr. Carol Queen, Jenny Block, and Lynn Comella. I also gave a few lectures and rented a bus we nicknamed the Sex Geek Bus to take 36 Sex Geeks to Baltimore and back for a night of networking and dancing as I emceed Sugar’s The Red and Black Ball. Big thanks to TRUST Intimacy massage oil for sponsoring the Sex Geek Bus…

April would also bring with it more true-life, dirty storytelling, something I’m finding out is A LOT of fun! It’s been my pleasure to have become sort of a regular fixture of San Fran’s Bawdy Storytelling, telling stories of lesbians and something NOT lube, and a tale which included Lindsay Lohan, even! (Little did I know in April that I’d be trekking down to Los Angeles in June to pop Bawdy’s “on the road” cherry in their first road trip show, a show I quickly dubbed The Sex Geek Road Trip!)
Here are videos from those shows… Enjoy!
And here is an inspiring story from youth sex activist Xandir…
